AI Researcher – Applied NLP & Machine Translation

About the role

Join Phrase’s AI Research team to develop and evaluate proprietary translation models that power a global language intelligence platform. You will work on real production traffic, fine‑tuning large language models and building evaluation pipelines alongside senior researchers.

Key responsibilities

• Fine‑tune and evaluate LLMs for translation and language‑quality tasks, using techniques such as LoRA.
• Build and maintain evaluation pipelines with automatic metrics (BLEU, TER, ChrF, MQM, COMET) and LLM‑as‑judge approaches.
• Develop agentic workflows that combine multi‑step reasoning, tool use, and structured output generation.
• Run reproducible experiments, document results and collaborate with product, engineering and solutions teams to ship capabilities.

Required profile

• Strong foundation in machine learning and NLP, with hands‑on experience fine‑tuning transformer‑based models.
• Knowledge of at least one area such as machine translation, MT evaluation, information extraction or text generation.
• Experience designing and running experiments, including both automatic and human‑in‑the‑loop evaluation.
• MSc in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics or related field; PhD is a plus.

Required skills

• Python programming.
• Hugging Face and PyTorch libraries.
• Weights & Biases for experiment tracking.
• PydanticAI and LangGraph for building agentic pipelines.
• Familiarity with LoRA fine‑tuning techniques.
