Postdoctoral Researcher in MENA Constitutionalism and Field Research

About the role

The Institute for the Interregional Study of Constitutionalism at Charles University seeks a postdoctoral researcher to examine how constitutionalism can contribute to political community in MENA societies. The role combines interdisciplinary scholarship with extensive qualitative fieldwork.

Key responsibilities

• Design and conduct qualitative field research in selected MENA countries, including interviews, observation, institutional mapping, and case‑based research.
• Analyse interactions between formal constitutional institutions and lived normative, social, religious, economic and political orders.
• Investigate conditions under which constitutional authority becomes socially meaningful and sustains political community.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary researchers and contribute findings to the Institute’s work on socially embedded constitutionalism.
• Publish results in leading academic journals and present at international conferences.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in socio‑legal studies, political science, sociology, anthropology, Middle Eastern Studies or a closely related field.
• Substantial experience conducting qualitative field research in the MENA region.
• Proficiency in Arabic sufficient for independent fieldwork and excellent written and spoken English.
• Demonstrated competence in interview‑based, observational, ethnographic or comparable qualitative methods.
• Strong publication record appropriate to early‑career stage; preferably completed Ph.D. within the last three years.
• Willingness to reside in Prague for the duration of the appointment.
