Senior Software Developer – Licensing & Billing
JetBrains · Prague
Job description
About the role
If you want to build and own the systems that decide what JetBrains customers are entitled to use and bill them accurately for it, this is for you. You will focus on designing backend services, keeping complex commercial flows correct, and tackling hard distributed‑systems challenges on the critical path of every paid request.
Key responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate backend services that determine customer entitlement and usage costs.
- Own end‑to‑end data flows from licensing and purchase ingestion to quota enforcement and consumption recording.
- Evolve the domain model to support new commercial structures, mixing seat‑based and usage‑based plans.
- Design integrations with external systems, ensuring idempotency, ordering, reconciliation and eventual consistency.
- Plan and execute live data migrations using feature flags, dual writes, backfills and verification.
- Build observability by defining invariants, metrics and alerts to catch silent divergence.
- Design versioned, backward‑compatible internal APIs for other JetBrains teams.
- Improve performance and reliability under continuous production load while decommissioning legacy subsystems.
Required profile
- Strong dedication to accuracy, especially where system errors have direct financial impact.
- Pragmatic judgment designing distributed systems where correctness under unreliable delivery is paramount.
- Habit of trusting metrics, traces and logs to understand production behavior.
- Ability to navigate and simplify large existing codebases with legacy decisions.
- Clear, direct communication skills for agreeing on API contracts across teams.
- Focus on testing as an essential design tool.
Required skills
- Kotlin
- Java
- PostgreSQL (relational databases, transactions, live schema migrations)
- Distributed systems patterns (idempotency, retry, eventual consistency, data reconciliation)
- Feature flags and staged rollouts for zero‑downtime migrations
- Versioned, backward‑compatible API design
- Event‑driven architectures and message brokers such as Kafka
- Production incident diagnosis and debugging
