Senior Backend Engineer, Actors

About the role

Apify is a marketplace of ready-to-run tools for AI that automate work on the web, and it is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join a small, cross-functional team of experienced engineers building and scaling some of Apify Store's most popular Actors. You will add new features and approaches, including AI, build internal tooling that helps other engineering teams, and mentor junior engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Build and scale cloud programs (Actors) that crawl and extract data reliably under real-world load
• Add new features and approaches (including AI) to popular Actors while keeping them fast and reliable for thousands of users
• Work on internal projects and tooling such as shared libraries and AI-powered tools
• Write clean, elegant code and keep it that way through reviews and refactoring
• Reverse-engineer how websites work and design APIs other developers enjoy using
• Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, pairing and growth conversations
• Own the design of the Actors and tools you build and their integration with the codebase

Required profile

• Strong JavaScript and TypeScript (Node.js) with a solid understanding of web technologies
• 3+ years of professional or open source experience on a non-trivial project built with a team
• Treats code quality, readability and refactoring as part of the job
• Already uses AI tools in work and keeps learning them
• Appetite for continuous learning in web scraping and beyond
• Cares about good design and maintainable code
• Clear communication in English, written and spoken

Required skills

• JavaScript and TypeScript (Node.js)
• Nice to have: web scraping experience and contributions to user-facing products or open source
